Nowhere in Particular
Every town has a road you've never turned down. We'll point you at one.
What it is
Every mapping app on your phone is built to remove the part where you don't know where you are. This one puts it back.
You get a direction and a distance. That's the whole interface. There is no route, no turn-by-turn, no blue line, and no picture of what you're looking for. Somewhere out there is a real thing worth seeing — a monument, a bridge, a lighthouse, a place that has been sitting there the whole time you've lived here — and the only way to reach it is to read the landscape and work it out.
Mostly that means driving. It doesn't have to. There is a walking mode with its own envelope — a few blocks out to a couple of miles — which turns the same game into something you can play from your own front door, with a kid, without a car. The corpus carries 576,576 geodetic survey marks for exactly that: a brass disk set flush in a pavement, invisible until you are standing on it.
A new way to explore your local area and its history off the beaten path, in a way that lets new discoveries and experiences actually happen.
Eyes up, out, in the world
This is a game about getting people out into their own region and seeing it differently — going down roads they've never turned onto, into areas they'd never thought to go, chasing something whose location they have to deduce.
That's also the design test every feature has to pass, and it's a sharper test than "is it fun": does this send you somewhere you wouldn't otherwise have gone, with your attention on the world rather than the phone? A richer screen fails that test. So the screen stays poor on purpose.
How it's built
- A bearing and a range. One heading, one distance. No route, no turn-by-turn, no map line to follow.
- Real places only.Every destination is a thing that actually exists at coordinates somebody surveyed.
- No marker text ships. You get where it is, never what it is. Finding out is the point — and it's why the corpus is coordinates only.
- Dead Reckoning mode.Sound only. No screen at all — the one mode where you truly have nothing but a heading.
- Local first.Your drives and your attempt history live on your device.
- One purchase. No ads, no timers, no consumables, no subscription.
The data is public
The marker corpus the game points at is published openly under the Open Database License, coordinates and classification only. If you want the underlying data — to build with, to check our work, or because you're a surveyor who wants the bridge marks — it's yours.
